Why I’m Fundraising for Miami Poetry Club

When I found MPC, a door cracked open. Suddenly, there was a place where I didn’t have to explain why I write. I could just be me. Over time, that door became a home.

I was once just someone looking for consistency in my writing, in community, in something that could hold me steady when life felt uncertain. I'd always been a poet, but I wanted to find people who believed in its power the way I did, who saw it not just as art, but as a way to stay alive, connected, and seen.

Now, as Programs Director, I get to help carry that feeling forward and to create what I once needed: a consistent, caring, creative space where people can show up as themselves and grow through craft, community, and poetry.

Miami Poetry Club is a nonprofit that turns blank pages and stages into community. We host free workshops, open mics, and poetry events that welcome everyone from first-time poets to lifelong writers. Our work is about more than literacy and writing. We are here for connection, belonging, and building a literary heartbeat for Miami.

• Expand free writing programs across Miami’s neighborhoods
• Upgrade our audio and event equipment and provide writing supplies
• Build a permanent Writer’s House (Clubhouse) that will be a home for Miami’s literary community to gather, learn, and inspire.

 I believe in this work because I’ve lived what it creates. Poetry gave me language for the parts of myself I couldn’t yet explain, and community turned that language into hope.
