21 years ago I found myself in an unexpected situation while on a family cruise. What was meant to be a relaxing vacation quickly turned stressful when our 13-month-old came down with a stomach virus. Between caring for my sick baby and cleaning up constant messes, I soon faced every parent’s nightmare — I ran out of diapers.

When I went to the cruise shop in search of more, I was told they didn’t sell diapers of any kind. Panic set in. The ship was still days away from port, and there was no store, no pharmacy, no delivery service — nowhere to turn.

That’s when something remarkable happened. Word spread among the passengers, and fellow parents began showing up at our door with extra diapers from their own suitcases.
