Urban Oasis Project has run the best farmers markets in Miami for 14 years, and now they've been awarded a $2.5 million dollar grant over the next 5 years. I'm excited to support them in their endeavour to purchase a 10 acre piece of land in the Redland, secure a trust to keep it in agriculture forever, and to build a farmer hub and training center: a place where new and underserved farmers can easily lease land, share infrastructure, and gain education focused on farming.
USDA funding will cover our Co-directors and other staff positions, and a good portion of the down-payment to acquire the land, but we are fundraising to cover a lot of additional costs as well as to get started on the project immediately, before the USDA releases funding. We still don’t know exactly when the funding will begin, but we know we will need support from our community in order to get it started.
This Give Miami Day, Urban Oasis Project is asking for your help to create security and training for farms and farmers in South Florida. Every donation this year will go to supporting this land access and educational program for underserved farmers in your community. UOP supports small farmers and we want to see more of them thriving in our community!
