Creating Commons Farm in the Redland
$350 Raised
At farmers markets and our online platform, with the Florida Access Bucks (FAB) program, we double the value of SNAP benefits. In 2025 we will redeem over $60,000 in SNAP and matching incentives- money we spend with local farms. FAB creates a uniquely welcoming environment for people who may otherwise be excluded from the local food movement. Our Farmers Markets create community building spaces where networking and interaction happen amongst diverse demographics, and provide a low barrier to entry venue for new small businesses- some of which have gone on to establish brick and mortar locations or franchise out to other farmers markets as well.
Project Maracuya now distributes almost free fresh produce boxes for 20-30 families weekly. Customers also help us distribute these and can be ordered from our online store called Localline. We believe good food is a right for all and essential for any quality of life. These boxes are a $40 value offered for $10, delivery included.
GIVE Gardens, our major charitable program, builds vegetable gardens on a sliding scale payment basis for families at their homes. Last season over 40 individual gardens were installed as well as support and consultation for 4 community gardens thanks to your donations and support from the Fine & Greenwald Foundation. Again, this year we are again relying mainly on individual donations as we submit new funding requests to other organizations.
We also offer
• education through a weekly newsletter sent to over 4000 engaged members, highlighting issues of importance, partner events, local farming news and more
•frequent speaking opportunities (featured on radio shows, podcasts, etc) and trainings on Food Justice
• CSA style boxes for corporate partners, health fairs etc that want to educate about health and nutrition and supporting the local economy
• Compost collection at markets.
•Creating the Commons Network, a farmer training and incubator project. We are hiring apprentices, mentors, networking those producing food to share resources, providing a free tool lending library, and giving our mini grants and offering free workshops.
Urban Oasis Project envisions a Miami where local food is affordable and accessible to everyone, and has been growing a socially conscious food movement for 16 years.
