Why I Started the Miami Poetry Club

Hey, I’m Sten Garcia, founder of the Miami Poetry Club.

Back in 2018, I was creatively starved. I was working nonstop, disconnected from people, and honestly, I felt like I’d lost that spark that makes life feel meaningful. Then I rediscovered poetry — and it changed everything. Writing gave me a way to slow down, reflect, and heal. But when I looked around for a community of other poets, I couldn’t find one.

What started as a small idea turned into the Miami Poetry Club, now a nonprofit that provides no-cost poetry writing workshops and open mics across the city. I’ve seen people walk in quiet and unsure, then find their voice through writing — sometimes sharing stories about loss, trauma, or healing; sometimes sharing laughter and light. What happens in that space is real transformation.
