The League of Women Voters was founded in Chicago in 1920, just six months before the 19th amendment was ratified and women won the right to vote. Formed by the suffragists of the National American Woman Suffrage Association, the League began as a "mighty political experiment" designed to help 20 million women carry out their new responsibilities as voters.
The League has been defending democracy for over 100 years. Today, we continue fighting for election protection, democratic reforms, and equal access to the ballot—all while maintaining our commitment to nonpartisanship and fostering an informed electorate.
The League of Women Voters of Miami-Dade is a chapter of the national League, dedicated to promoting democracy and civic engagement in our local community.
We are fully committed to diversity, equity, and inclusion in principle and in practice. There shall be no barriers to full participation in this organization on the basis of gender, ethnicity, race or any characteristic that can be identified as recognizing or illustrating diversity.
