Celebrating Our 5th Anniversary

WOPHA stands as a unique institution, committed to researching, promoting, supporting, and educating the public about women photographers' contributions to modern and contemporary art. As we celebrate our 5th anniversary on November 18, 2023, we invite you to join us on a remarkable journey to enhance the organization's capacity by strengthening administrative staff and securing a physical space.

A Brief Insight Into Our Journey So Far

Founded on November 18, 2018, by visionary art historian and curator Aldeide Delgado and accomplished visual artist Francisco Maso, WOPHA has achieved exceptional milestones. We've organized over 50 events, including exhibitions, panel discussions, portfolio reviews, and symposiums, impacting 46 art historians and curators, 42 women photography collectives and organizations, and over 100 women photographers. Our vision is clear: to create a more diverse and equitable world by preserving, documenting, and promoting the work of women photographers. We aspire to be a driving force for innovative thinking and discussions surrounding the role of women in photographic arts. 

Embracing the Power of Women, Photography, and Free Expression

Our programs' activities span a wide spectrum, encompassing the digitization of historical archives, the publication of catalogs and books, the presentation of lectures and workshops, and the development of online and physical exhibitions, fellowships, and artist residencies. We place strong emphasis on historical research, producing rigorous academic content with a specific focus on the diverse artistic production of Latin American and Latinx communities, including photographers from Mexico, Central and South America, the Caribbean, and artists of Latin American descent living and working in the United States.

Global and Local Impact

WOPHA hasn't walked this path alone. Through strategic local and national partnerships, we've expanded our projects to an international scale. We've taken the lead in promoting diversity and representation in photographic arts, ensuring that the stories and perspectives of women and non-binary individuals are celebrated globally, considering the unique geopolitical location of Miami as a city at the crossroads of the Americas.

We have built a robust stable of high-quality, mission-driven annual programs, digital catalogs, workshops, and exhibitions that have unveiled the hidden histories of women photographers over the past five years.

Our first book, titled "Becoming Sisters: Women Photography Collectives & Organizations," was shortlisted as the Best Book in the Independent category of the 2022 Lucie Photo Book Prize.

In 2019, we were honored to receive the prestigious Knight Arts Challenge award from the John S. and James L. Knight Foundation. This recognition affirmed our unwavering commitment to our cause, supporting the inaugural 2021 WOPHA Congress at the Pérez Art Museum Miami, with more than 1,000 in-person and virtual attendees.
