Tropical Audubon Society has been leading South Florida bird walks, championing wildlife, protecting Biscayne Bay and the Everglades since our 1947 founding, with our roots dating back even earlier. As the official local chapter of National Audubon, we are among Miami’s most esteemed non-profit environmental organizations.

Known as “South Florida’s Voice of Conservation,” we’ve been on the frontlines of environmental protection for decades — standing strong against contamination of our drinking water, defending the Urban Development Boundary, and advocating for the protection of Endangered Species and the preservation of our region’s Globally Critically Imperiled Pine Rockland habitat.

Your gift will support our crucial local conservation efforts, including our current challenge of the proposed “Miami Wilds” theme park project. If built adjacent to Globally Critically Imperiled Pine Rockland it would adversely impact the endangered Florida Bonneted Bat, Miami Tiger Beetle and Bartram's Hairstreak and Florida Leafwing butterflies who rely on the habitat for their very survival. Your gift will also help us expand our “Plants for Birds” initiatives, count birds for science, sustain the Cape Florida Banding Station, grow our award-winning “Tropical Audubon Ambassador” education program, and help us advocate for Everglades restoration and Biscayne Bay health.

We’re also engaged in preserving our historic 1932 Doc Thomas House headquarters, listed in the National Register of Historic Places, and also a Florida Heritage Site and a Dade County Historic Landmark. The charming cottage is framed by our wooded Steinberg Nature Center grounds — a 2.2 acre oasis dominated by Pine Rockland and Hardwood Hammock demonstration forests. Our campus serves as the backdrop for Bird-friendly Gardening Days, Bird Walks, Conservation Concerts, Birdstock and Members Migration, the annual Bird Day and Go-Native Plant Sale events, and alfresco "Walk in the Woods with Wine & Whisk" dinner parties.

Mission

Tropical Audubon Society endeavors to conserve and restore natural South Florida ecosystems, focusing on birds, other wildlife and their habitats. We facilitate this mission via:

Conservation: Enrich our legacy of protecting, conserving and restoring South Florida ecosystems by working closely with local governments and other stakeholders, and by fostering wise stewardship of native habitats, birds and other indigenous wildlife.

Education: Advance a more meaningful community understanding of and appreciation for Nature and our region's unique environment and ecological relationships via robust education programs and cultivation of local conservation advocates.

Preservation: Honor and perpetuate our "South Florida's Voice of Conservation" heritage, nurture our near-native Steinberg Nature Center campus, and preserve the integrity and historic landmark status of our society's 1932 Doc Thomas House headquarters.
