Tropical Audubon Society has been connecting people with birds and nature for nearly 80 years, while protecting the wild places that make our region so extraordinary.
Serving as the local chapter of National Audubon and known as “South Florida’s Voice of Conservation,” we're considered Miami’s oldest conservation advocacy organization. With a local legacy rooted in the early 1900s, we’ve led generations of South Floridians into the field on bird walks since our formal 1947 founding, championed wildlife and native habitat, and advocated for the health of the Everglades, Biscayne Bay, Globally Critically Imperiled Pine Rocklands habitat and other unique ecosystems that sustain us all.

Listed in the National Register of Historic Places, named a Florida Heritage Site and recognized as a Miami-Dade County Historic site, the quaint cottage is nestled between our Pine Rocklands and Hardwood Hammock demonstration forests, and represents Miami’s rustic past.
Open to the public year-round, it's here on our leafy campus that conservation is embraced by our community — we welcome South Floridians for Bird Day, Bird-Friendly Gardening Days, Bird Walks, Conservation Concerts, Fundraising Parties, Go-Native Plant Sales, and our Members Migration.

Conservation: Enrich our legacy of protecting, conserving and restoring South Florida ecosystems by working closely with local governments and other stakeholders, and by fostering wise stewardship of native habitats, birds and other indigenous wildlife.
Education: Advance a more meaningful community understanding of and appreciation for Nature and our region's unique environment and ecological relationships via robust education programs and cultivation of local conservation advocates.
Preservation: Honor and perpetuate our "South Florida's Voice of Conservation" heritage, nurture our near-native Steinberg Nature Center campus, and preserve the integrity and historic landmark status of our society's 1932 Doc Thomas House headquarters.
