Classroom assistants play an essential role. They support students’ individual needs, assist with small-group and whole-group instruction, and help manage the flow of the classroom. They contribute to lesson and activity preparation, supervise during lunch, and provide invaluable assistance during testing. When teachers must be absent, assistants are able to step in, ensuring far smoother transitions than students experience with unfamiliar substitutes.
Most importantly, assistants form their own unique emotional bonds with students—relationships that enhance the sense of care, security, and comfort in the classroom. With an assistant present each day, students experience two layers of support from the adults who guide their learning—an opportunity that many classrooms simply do not have. This added stability enriches both the academic environment and students’ overall well-being.
