What is lost, and what is gained, when we move from one place to another?

This photo sits on my desk. Between emails and Teams meetings and phone calls… it catches my eye.   It reminds me why I’m so passionate about working at Hispanic Unity of Florida (HUF).  It shows my grandmother when she left Cuba in 1960 with my young mom in tow – my grandfather following shortly thereafter. In a sentiment shared by many, she once told me, “we thought it would only be for a few months.”

My grandparents lived in Cuba for over a decade… they got married, had a baby, and owned a small, but growing, business.  It’s where they expected to build their future – one that was promising and full of hope.   Like many people, they found themselves needing to flee everything they built – their new home, their frolicking business, friends, and family.  

After a few years in another country, my grandparents found themselves in the USA, where they started over for the third time, with grit, determination, courage, hope, perseverance and resilience.

They are why I am a (proud) American today. What they lost in leaving their new home, I gained in opportunity. Opportunity for safety, education, liberty and health. 

It’s the same dreams that immigrants in our community have today: to work hard, to gain an education, and to give back to their newfound homes.

I’m honored to work at an organization that helps people on this journey.
