In 2023, Florida created the Qualified Medication Aide role to help nursing homes facing a historic nursing workforce shortage. Trained CNAs, CNA certified graduating High School Seniors can now safely give certain medications under nurse supervision, earning new responsibility and room to grow. CNA Advance funds experienced CNAs to complete the state-required 40-hour, in-person Qualified Medication Aide training, delivered by a Florida-licensed RN through a Board-approved education partner. Participants learn medication laws and safety, infection control, anatomy and physiology basics, medication routes, documentation, and controlled substances, then demonstrate their skills in a clinical check signed off by an RN. Oluwadoyinsolami Development (ODI) covers the full cost, including background screening, so CNAs can advance their careers without the financial barrier. In partnership with a Board-approved nursing education provider, ODI funds and coordinates medication administration training so CNAs can grow their skills, take on more responsibility, and earn more.

In 2027, CNA Advance will fund 10 experienced South Florida CNAs to train as Qualified Medication Aides. Our goals are:

  • At least 90% (9 CNAs) complete the full 40-hour in-person training.
  • At least 80% pass the RN-witnessed clinical skills validation and are eligible for the Qualified Medication Aide designation.
  • At least 70% of validated graduates are working in a medication aide role or have taken on new medication responsibilities within 90 days.
  • 100% of graduates receive information on the required annual 2-hour medication administration renewal to keep their skills current.
