Veteran suicides are on the rise in Florida, and we need your help. Because of the financial support it receives, The Fire Watch is able to provide free veteran suicide prevention training to the community. More than 7,000 have already taken it and in Northeast Florida, veteran suicide went down 27% from 2019-2022, the largest reduction of any region in the state.
Established in 2019, The Fire Watch is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization dedicated to ending veteran suicide in Florida by preventing veteran suicide. It was founded under three premises:
1. That suicide is preventable
2. That we must connect veterans to resources they need before they slip into crisis
3. That the broader community can play a vital role in the effort
The Fire Watch (TFW) is the only veteran's nonprofit that captures county-specific suicide data in a particular state. It represents the most up-to-date veteran suicide data in Florida. Almost 70% of our Watch Standers have never served in the military. Veterans are 1.5 times more likely to die by suicide compared to non-military U.S. adults.
We need your support to ensure Watch Stander training remains free to the public and to provide dedicated resources to additional parts of the state. Where The Fire Watch has an established footprint (Northeast Florida, South Florida, Tampa, Escambia County) Veteran suicides are down 16% from 2019- 2022. Throughout the rest of the state, Veteran suicides are up 8% during that same time.
