Dr. Moya’s remarkable career and leadership in the world of anesthesiology changed the trajectory of the profession, both nationally and internationally, and his legacy of innovation, research, and education is deeply woven into the fabric of our department.

Dr. Frank Moya’s impact on anesthesiology is impossible to overstate. As a brilliant anesthesiologist, educator, and visionary, he became the youngest department chairman in the country at just 33 years of age. His pioneering research in obstetric anesthesia and newborn physiology laid the foundation for much of the modern practice in these areas. As chairman of the University of Miami’s Department of Anesthesiology from 1962 to 1970, Dr. Moya led the department through a period of exponential growth and development. He also held prestigious leadership roles in national and state anesthesiology organizations, including serving as the president of the American Society of Anesthesiologists, the Association of University Anesthesiologists, and the Society of Academic Anesthesia Chairs. His remarkable body of work—spanning over 250 scientific articles, abstracts, and textbooks—has had a lasting impact on the field, shaping the practices of anesthesiologists around the world.
