Eve for Friends of the Everglades

Friends of the Everglades was founded in 1969 by environmentalist and author Marjory Stoneman Douglas to halt a damaging development proposed in the heart of what's now Big Cypress National Preserve. In 2025, that origin story gained new relevance as Friends rose to fight another harmful development in the same spot — a mass detention center known as "Alligator Alcatraz." Friends of the Everglades has banded together with allies in court to protect our country's bedrock environmental laws, so that the Everglades may endure for future generations.
