Alicia for Vocal Youth Miami

At Vocal Youth Miami, we are dedicated to empowering empathic, creative young people through the transformative power of vocal music. Our mission is simple but urgent: to remove the barriers that keep far too many Miami youth from accessing rich, meaningful music experiences.

When I began my journey as a music educator, I worked tirelessly to give my students every opportunity I could imagine. I believed it was my responsibility to open as many doors as possible and to prepare them to walk confidently through the ones that best aligned with their goals. I knew the power of music because I had lived it; music shaped me, grounded me, and carried me forward. But as a school teacher, my reach was limited to the students in my building.

 

Joining the team at Vocal Youth Miami expanded that reach in ways I couldn’t have imagined. I’ve watched students’ eyes light up when they realize they can sing in two parts for the very first time. I’ve seen friendships spark between young people who might never have crossed paths if not for music. I’ve witnessed their confidence grow, step by step, note by note, as they support one another and celebrate each other’s progress. And through this work, I’ve been able to launch new initiatives, such as our Leadership Workshop and the Tenor–Bass Workshop, creating spaces where even more young people can grow through vocal music.
