What started out as a neighborhood community farm has turned into an expansion of community, food access and greenspaces within the Historically Black community of Overtown, located in Miami, Florida.

We are fundraising to expand our local food aggregation, cold storage capacity, and community distribution network.

Sistrunk Seeds Agriplex is the site of The People’s Pantry Market as a central hub for community nourishment and engagement. We are currently in stage 2 of our build out process and plan to expand capacity to refrigerate and store over 1,500 lbs of pantry staples and produce every week. To scale our impact, we collaborate closely with key community partners, including Urban Health Partnerships (UHP), Food & Nutrition for All (FNFA) Collaborative, Buddy System MIA, Urban Oasis Project, and OCYC, to address food security across Miami-Dade.

Community Meals & Outreach: Meals are prepared and consumed during on-site classes, allowing youth and families to directly engage in harvesting from the garden and preparing fresh dishes. So far, we prepare over 500 meals per month directly delivered to community members in need, aiming to expand distribution toward a target of 40,000 lbs of food overall.

Community Education Cohorts: Focused on nutrition and physical fitness. Our classes have been attended by over 450+ participants, with our highlighted Squeeze Pilates program consistently registering 50+ guests per session. In addition, our programs aim to train cohorts of agribusiness and urban farming interns to support long-term capacity.

Mutual Aid Through Nourishment: Additional meals not consumed on site are dispersed within the community to nearby residents and transient persons living within a 5-mile radius of our facility each week. Supported by strong partner collaborations, including OCYC, Buddy System MIA, and Chapman Partnership, we provide consistent meal access and support to local families and households in ZIP code 33136.

Accessibility: By hosting sessions in Overtown, the program ensured geographic proximity for the target population. Our latest agriplex is strategically located within 50 feet of a local major public transit stop. We also provide curriculum online via youtube and other social media avenues. The curriculum is also included in our onsite classes focused on container gardening and container-based composting for families with limited yard space at home at no cost. Our community Agriplex, food pantry distribution hub and educational farming center is slated to become the cornerstone of Historic Overtown.

By restoring the green spaces and building out a more sustainable food system within walking distance of our constituents, we've shown ourselves to be committed to growth, development and upward mobility for everyone that calls any community in South Florida home.
