Most solutions addressing climate change are terrestrially biased; focused on leveraging less than 30% of the planet (land) to try to solve a global problem. Even if we planted 1 trillion trees, we would only be able to capture up to 1/3rd of all human CO2 emissions to date. Despite being the planet’s largest absorber of heat and carbon, the oceans have largely been overlooked as an asset against climate change.

Altogether, the greatest barriers we have to solving climate change and marine degradation aren’t technical. Instead, they are barriers to opportunity, implementation, and collaboration for people, solutions, and regions alike. Seaworthy Collective launched in 2020 to enable access and inclusion in innovation for ocean and climate impact, helping planet passionate people overcome the systemic barriers to participation in the blue economy.

Seaworthy Collective (501c3) is a Miami-based BlueTech (ocean & climate impact innovation) entrepreneur support organization and community. Our mission is to make BlueTech accessible & inclusive. We envision bringing all hands on deck for BlueTech, where everyone can contribute to solutions making positive change for our blue planet. We empower Sea Change Makers – supporting current, aspiring, & underrepresented startup founders across diverse backgrounds and impact areas. 

Our impact areas of focus include: 

• Greenhouse Gas Reduction & Removal: seaweed farming, nature-based solutions, and decarbonization

• Coastal Resilience & Adaptation: environmental restoration such as mangroves and coral reefs, infrastructure for sea level rise and storm surge

• Pollution: improving water quality and tackling plastic pollution both upstream and downstream

Seaworthy has amassed a global network of 2,250 members, 250 mentors and collaborators, and investors with over $1 billion in combined assets. Seaworthy’s community programs, including the Climate Community Social Hour and Sea Change Makers Speaker Series, have educated more than 3500 people over 2 years. Seaworthy’s startup programs, with its flagship Venture Studio and new Founder Mentorship Program, have supported 26 startups and 46 founders across 4 continents over 3 years. Seaworthy startups have raised $6.5 million within 1 year of graduating, with 57% of founders coming from underrepresented backgrounds.

Seaworthy Collective is an endorsed project of the United Nations Decade of Ocean Science for Sustainable Development and an environmental partner for 1% For The Planet. Seaworthy is also a member of the 1000 Ocean Startups Coalition and Ocean Visions’ Global Ecosystem for Ocean Solutions. Seaworthy has also been recognized with Prince Albert II of Monaco Foundation’s Prize for Innovative Philanthropy, as well as winners of the Department of Energy’s American-Made Energy Program for Innovation Clusters (EPIC) Prize and Small Business Administration’s Growth Accelerator Fund Competition.
