About Us

Uplift Literacy is a Miami-based 501(c)3 nonprofit organization that believes literacy is the cornerstone to lifelong success. We partner with schools in underserved communities to empower children with the necessary literacy skills and resources to read proficiently by the end of 3rd grade, a milestone that is a significant indicator of a child's future educational development.

Why Reading Matters

In 2023, a staggering 48% of Miami-Dade County public school 3rd graders scored below proficient in reading. By this grade, 3 out of 4 lagging readers never catch up and are four times more likely to drop out of high school if reading below grade level. 

Children from low-income households are at a greater risk of having lower reading scores compared to their more privileged counterparts. Poverty compounds the achievement gap, making it harder for these children to access the necessary resources, support, and opportunities to overcome their reading difficulties thus perpetuating a cycle of disadvantage and inequality.

Our Programs & How We Are Changing the Trajectory of Children's Lives

Uplift Literacy utilizes a comprehensive and holistic literacy approach to tackling the reading gap.  By providing small-group early literacy interventions both in school and after-school, instilling a love for reading, educating parents on being advocates for literacy development at home, and increasing children’s access to books, Uplift Literacy not only empowers children but also strengthens our entire community.
