Our Story
In the Richmond Heights community of South Miami-Dade, the story of SBC Community Development Corporation began with a simple but profound belief: every child deserves a safe place to learn, every family deserves support, and every elder deserves dignity. For more than 20 years, SBC CDC has carried this belief forward by creating opportunities that change the direction of young lives and strengthen the community from generation to generation.
Where Hope Meets Opportunity
The heartbeat of SBC CDC is its youth. When school lets out, many students return to empty homes, academic struggles, or environments that don’t nurture their dreams. The SBC CDC Youth Zone was created to change that. Today, our After-School Care (ASC) Program serves 65–150 children in grades K–8 each year, with an extraordinary 90% retention rate—proof that our children feel safe, valued, and inspired here.
Inside our doors, students experience more than supervision—they experience possibility. They receive academic tutoring, one-on-one reading and math support, homework help, and access to STEM labs, computer stations, tablets, books, and mentors who see their brilliance long before they see it in themselves. They also explore visual and performing arts, discovering confidence on stage, creativity in the studio, and joy in expressing who they are.
For many of our children, SBC CDC becomes the place where they first believe, “My dreams matter.”
A Summer of Discovery, Creativity, and Belonging
Each summer, students return for our transformational S.T.R.E.A.M.S. Summer Camp, a full-day, hands-on experience focused on Science, Technology, Reading & Literacy, Engineering & Robotics, Arts, Mathematics, and Sports. Here, learning becomes an adventure—one that builds curiosity, leadership, and resilience.
The highlight of camp is our end-of-summer musical production, where students perform alongside professional Miami artists in iconic shows like Annie, Sarafina, Sister Act 2, The Wiz, The Sounds of Motown, and The HBCU Experience: It Really Is a Different World. These productions are more than performances—they are moments when children discover their voice, their courage, and their capacity to shine.
Art exhibitions—curated with MUCE 305 and Artwalk Presents—gave students the chance to see their artwork displayed with professional pieces, celebrating their identity and their story.
Our staff of certified teachers, professional artists, and student interns ensure every child is seen, supported, and encouraged to grow. High school students can also access our free college and career readiness program, helping them prepare for the next chapter of their journey.
Honoring Elders, Strengthening Community
SBC CDC believes that a thriving community uplifts both its youngest and oldest members. In partnership with Miami-Dade County and Cornerstone Group Development Corp., we co-developed the John & Anita Senior Residences, a 79-unit affordable housing community that provides seniors with stability, independence, and respect.
Our outreach doesn’t stop there. Each year we host events that bring families together and meet critical needs:
• A free Community Family Day
• A Walmart shopping experience that gives 200 children a $100 holiday gift
• Technology classes for seniors with Microsoft
• Adopt-a-Senior outings with local youth
• Shoe drives, school supply giveaways, and food support
• Artwalk Richmond Heights, a beloved pop-up festival celebrating culture and creativity
Every program, every event, every partnership reflects our promise: to serve our community with compassion and excellence.
Why Your Gift Matters
When you give to SBC CDC, you are investing in more than programs—you are investing in futures. You are giving a child a safe haven after school, a meaningful summer experience, and the confidence to believe in what is possible. You are helping families feel connected and supported. You are honoring elders with dignity and care. You are uplifting a community that has always carried strength but has not always been given resources.
Your support fuels hope. It fuels access. It fuels transformation.
