Miami-Dade is in a quiet crisis. It's not the kind you see on the news. It's happening behind closed doors, in homes that are one broken appliance, one hurricane season, or one insurance cancellation away from becoming unsafe.

We see it every day. A senior cooling his home with a fan because her A/C died in July. A mother heating bathwater on the stove because her water heater failed months ago.

These are our neighbors, and they're being forced to choose between feeding their loved ones and repairing the place that keeps them safe. For thousands of Miami-Dade residents on fixed or limited incomes, that's the reality.

Who we are
Rebuilding Together Miami is a people-first, community-driven nonprofit, founded over 30 years ago to preserve safe, healthy, and affordable homes across Miami-Dade County. We're the only housing nonprofit in the county providing critical, high-priority repairs at no cost to low-income residents.

Housing is a key driver of health. By repairing roofs, removing hazards, and improving accessibility, we help prevent displacement, protect public health, and preserve affordable housing. Backed by strong partnerships and careful financial stewardship, we've built a reputation for quality work that changes whole neighborhoods.

This year so far
We repaired over 90 homes and helped over 200 neighbors stay safely housed. We replaced roofs, restored cooling systems, fixed leaking plumbing, beautified neighborhoods, and installed water heaters. But the need is growing faster than we can keep up. Our phones ring nonstop: seniors without A/C, families dropped by their insurance because the roof is too old, parents with a dead refrigerator or stove and no way to replace it. More than 250 households are on our waitlist at any given time.

Getting ahead of the heat
When temperatures spiked this summer, we didn't just keep pace. Our staff spent countless hours researching and building new tools so we could reach the most vulnerable households before a hot week turned into a medical emergency.

Extreme heat doesn't hit everyone equally. The households we serve are mostly elderly, BIPOC, and living with a disability. Over half are led by women, and many of our older neighbors live alone. As we age, our bodies lose the ability to handle heat, which is why older adults face the highest rates of hospitalization and death in extreme heat.

So we changed how we work. We stopped going first-come, first-served and built the Heat Vulnerability Index, which scores each household on seven risk factors, including age, disability, heat-sensitive medical conditions, living alone, and the condition of their cooling system. The most dangerous situations get help first. In August we also began assessing insulation and window heat gain during initial visits, so we fix what will actually make a home cooler, not just the AC. And we use room-level sensors to check that a repair really worked. We want to find people before the emergency, not after.
