Transition, Inc.

A nonprofit organization

Over forty years ago, Marvin Rauzin, a local Miami businessman, began visiting the County jail once a week to meet with inmates who were scheduled to be released over the next several months. His belief was simple - that if a returning citizen could find meaningful employment upon being released from jail, the likelihood of his going back to jail would be greatly reduced. This belief is now fact: the number one factor to reducing recidivism is overcoming the employment barriers facing retuning citizens.

Mr. Rauzin witnessed firsthand the transformed lives resulting from his volunteer work and with impassioned prodding, he enlisted more individuals to help. The volunteer ranks expanded and Transition, Inc., a non-profit agency, was born. Over the years, Transition added staff and expanded capacity by garnering government and private sector contracts and private donations.

For the previously incarcerated citizens, Transition, Inc. provides supportive services to ensure that he/she can successfully get and maintain a job. Intensive counseling and strong case management along with life skills and cognitive/behavioral training assist the returning citizen in his/her pursuit to live as a productive citizen. Through linkages with other agencies, Transition's case managers refer clients for drug treatment, vocational and academic education, mental health services, and the provision of basic necessities such as food, clothing and shelter, as required.

Transition targets its efforts towards assisting youthful offenders, returning residents, homeless, disabled, veterans and low income individuals as well as others facing various employment barriers in the Overtown community. It is the agency's goal to remain pro-actively engaged with clients and to ensure they succeed in satisfying job performance standards as well as adopting additional life skills to remain financially stable and personally self-sufficient.
