Lugar Comun

Lugar Comun, founded by Venezuelan immigrants, has been championing literature and the arts for over a decade. In 2018, the founders were forced to emigrate and move to Miami, where they continued their mission to use literature as a platform for understanding in communities. They established Alliteration Publishing House drawing inspiration from Miami Beach Art Deco design and multiculturalism that makes up our community. Alliteration publishes authors from different linguistic backgrounds reflecting migration experiences and offering multilingual editions in English, Spanish, and Italian—a unique contribution to the English-speaking literary world.

In 3 years, we’ve published 18 titles, including 2 children's books, received 601 contest applications, hosted 6 in-person events reaching an audience of more than 300, and participated in 4 book fairs. 

Notably, we were 1 of 25 recipients nationwide for the Poetry Foundation's "Equity in Verse" grant.

In 2024, our plans include: 

Children's Book Collection creation to include English and Spanish publications by contemporary authors and illustrators, advancing values for a brighter future alongside family-friendly activities throughout Miami-Dade County.

Estados Unidos en Español aims to promote Spanish literature in the U.S. through mobile events fostering cultural connections and showcasing Hispanic literature at international forums.

The 6th edition of the Lugar Comun Poetry Award will be launched in December 2023 for emerging writers who write in Spanish. The cash prize is $1,500 and includes publication in Spanish, English, and Italian.

Workshops: we will partner with the Miami Book Fair and other organizations to reinvigorate our educational activities.

Books, books, and more books: the goal is to publish 10 poetry and 5 fiction titles—authors from Brazil, Colombia, Cuba, Venezuela, and Mexico including the launch of a curated new collection to celebrate Hispanic heritage with authors who write in Spanish in the United States.
