The older population of the United States has experienced unprecedented growth in the past several decades. Hispanics are the fastest-growing segment of this population. According to the Miami-Dade Matters organization, the 55-plus Hispanic population of Miami-Dade in 2024 is 603,360. According to the US Administration on Aging population projections, this number will grow to well over two million in 25 more years.
The growing Hispanic population across the U.S. comprises an increasing number of seniors with a variety of special needs that are currently left unmet or insufficiently addressed. More specifically, the majority of Hispanic seniors are in critical situations, because they lack access to services that many of them don't even know exist. The Latino Center on Aging was established in 1991 to bridge that gap. Through its educational programs, training, technical assistance, advocacy efforts, and dissemination of information to both Spanish and English-speaking media, the Latino Center on Aging has been helping seniors, providing them with a strong voice over the last three decades.
Some of LCA's Highlights Include:
Alzheimer's and Parkinson's Disease Conferences
A subject that has proven to be of much interest in our communities has been Alzheimer's Disease. To bring updated information to our communities we have held nine local conferences in Spanish on this matter. In Miami-Dade and Broward Counties, Florida. And, two national virtual conferences in 2020 and 2022.
"Para Mayores" [For Seniors] Radio Show
Starting in 2018, the LCA has implemented with great success a weekly radio show on Radio La Nueva Poderosa 670AM Miami. Conducted by Mario Tapia, LCA's President & CEO, brings information on topics of interest to the growing Spanish-speaking elderly. During the quarantine of recent years, "Para Mayores" radio show proved to be of critical importance by bringing vital information on available help.
The LCA vision of the future is of a most caring, equal, and inclusive society. LCA was established in 1991, with a very unique mission: to improve the lives of Latino seniors through advocacy and education. Our challenge is to increase knowledge on the hardships faced by our elderly, and to assist in the creation of new programs and services directed towards them.
