Libby grew up in a loving, close-knit family. They played golf on Sundays, tennis on Friday nights, took family vacations, and spent time with friends and neighbors. Their home felt safe.

But it wasn’t.

Years later, Libby learned that her older brother had been sexually abused beginning at just five years old by someone their family knew and trusted.

His story is a powerful reminder: child sexual abuse does not discriminate. It can happen in any family, in places we believe are safe, and at the hands of people children know and trust.

PROTECTING CHILDREN IS NOT OPTIONAL.

For more than 31 years, Kristi House has been there for children and families in Miami-Dade affected by child sexual abuse, sex trafficking, and other childhood trauma.

As Miami-Dade County’s Children’s Advocacy Center, Kristi House brings the professionals involved in a child abuse case together so children and families can receive coordinated care in one child-friendly setting.

Children receive therapy, family advocacy, coordination, transportation, and other critical support completely free of charge.

The goal is simple: when a child has experienced abuse, that child should not have to navigate what comes next alone.

Libby knew through her years as a Kristi House Board member that child sexual abuse can happen in any family.

She knew boys could be victims.

She knew the person responsible is often someone the child knows and trusts.

What she never expected was to discover that those truths were part of her own family's story.

Her brother carried what happened to him for decades before telling her.

That silence is one reason Kristi House’s work matters so deeply: children need safe adults who know how to recognize concerns, respond when a child discloses, and connect families with specialized help.

For more than three decades, Kristi House has helped more than 30,000 children affected by abuse and trauma. 

But Kristi House’s work extends beyond responding after abuse occurs.

Through community prevention education, Kristi House equips parents, caregivers, educators, professionals, and others throughout Miami-Dade with tools to recognize warning signs, respond appropriately, and help prevent abuse before it starts.

Every child who walks through our doors has a different story.

Every child deserves an ending defined not by what happened to them, but by what happens next.
