WHO WE ARE

Informed Families partners with parents, schools and communities to help kids grow up safe, healthy and, drug free. 

We are a Florida-based nonprofit organization that reaches nearly 3 million people each year through our four substance abuse prevention campaigns, trainings, and events. We've been around for 43 years and started with Nancy Reagan and the grassroots Parent Movement in the 1980s.

Informed Families is the Florida affiliate of the National Family Partnership (NFP), who organizes the Red Ribbon Campaign, celebrated in over 90,000 K-12 schools nationwide.

Consequences of Youth Substance Use:

• Substance use can negatively impact brain development, especially in areas critical for decision-making, learning, and memory.   
• Teens who use substances are more likely to experience academic problems, mental health issues, and social difficulties.   
• Substance use increases the risk of injuries, accidents, and risky sexual behaviors.   
• Early substance use is a significant risk factor for developing substance use disorders later in life.

   

OUR GOALS HELP FLORIDA'S FAMILIES EVERY DAY:

     1. Increase the perception of harm for risky behaviors and illegal drug use.

     2. Reduce risk factors and change behaviors.

     3. Build resiliency in children through education.

WHAT WE DO

Informed Families builds resiliency in Florida's children and nurtures their full potential through prevention education. There are many distractions in today's busy world and our message is simple:

• Eating together four times weekly reduces the chance of risky behaviors.
• Talking to your child about drugs, drinking, and smoking early reduces the likelihood of substance abuse later.
• Parents are the biggest influencer in the life of their children.
• If you surround kids with healthy behaviors, they are more likely to keep it up.

The four campaigns together provide a yearlong school prevention program that allows a school to become a Red Ribbon Certified School.

Red Ribbon Certified Schools (RRCS) is an environmental change process that aligns Teachers, Parents, Students, and Administrators into a team to create an effective and healthy school climate through parental engagement and community building. Learn more at informedfamilies.org.
