Florida Ocean Cleanup Society (FOCUS) is a nonprofit 501(c)(3) organization, run by a dedicated team of passionate volunteers.
In Florida, the physical impacts of the climate crisis have been visible for years.
We believe that promoting eco-experiences in cities is one of the best ways to create awareness and activism, it helps people bring the issue closer to home, it makes them feel connected and empowered to demand local change for this global challenge. At the same time, it's a great way to deal with the rise of anxiety, depression, and other mental health difficulties, especially in young people.
We started running a sailing eco-tour in Miami's Biscayne Bay. We are fortunate to spot wildlife frequently, including marine mammals like dolphins and manatees.
However, there are only 150 wild dolphins left in Biscayne Bay, and we are currently looking for ways to help increase those numbers by creating more protection zones and enforcing boating safety regulations.
We are a part of the Miami clean-up community, a movement that is growing stronger every day.
Progress is already happening, but there is a lot more to be done. Here are some of the things we are planning to work on:
Natural solutions:
- Mangrove restoration, native tree planting, and man-made island barriers.
Engineering solutions:
- Storm drain, curb inlet screens (The City of Miami started to install about 1000 inlet screens. We've started pushing for this in 2019. This is a small step in the right direction, but we need to install one in every single storm drain).
- Demand sewage infrastructure maintenance, outfall pipes inspections, and removal of septic systems to connect to the main sewage line.
Activism:
- Push to ban single-use plastic.
- Promote environmentally responsible products and reusable items.
- Organize coastal clean-ups.
- Advocate for data-driven laws and regulations.
- Research the best practices to minimize human impact on the local environment.
FOCUS was born when a science teacher, a digital marketer, and a tech entrepreneur who are passionate about the ocean, joined forces to tackle pollution.
With a common passion for sailing, diving, fishing, and all water activities, we believe that helping to preserve the ocean and the natural world is key for human survival.
Our mission is to inspire new generations to create communities where people and nature can thrive together. We connect people and nature to instill a desire to protect our natural environment. We care deeply for Miami's coastlines and biodiversity and believe that we can still save the natural wonders of our local community.
Today, we are achieving our mission by:
1. Promoting eco-tourism and partnering with eco-experiences in the Miami area.
2. Organizing educational programs with the community highlighting local wildlife and ocean pollution.
3. Performing coastal cleanups & events to raise awareness and increase engaged citizens.
