Buddy System MIA

Buddy System MIA is a grassroots nonprofit fighting food insecurity by creating innovative ways to engage our Miami community and empowering neighbors to support neighbors, beginning with access to free, healthy food! Through art for social change and hands-on community organizing, we’re building lasting solutions to local issues, by the community, for the community.

Each year, we rescue and repurpose more than 250,000 pounds of surplus food, diverting it from waste and redirecting it into the hands of those who need it most.

Our programs center the most vulnerable members of our community: homebound seniors, people with disabilities, and families facing systemic poverty, discrimination, or isolation.

• Community Fridge Initiative: a network of public refrigerators in under-resourced neighborhoods, painted by local artists, providing free, healthy food 24/7.
• Homebound Food Access Program: local volunteers deliver fresh groceries to elderly and disabled neighbors, ensuring regular access to healthy food and human connection.
• Emergency Food Access Program: rapid-response grocery deliveries for neighbors in urgent crisis.
• Community Events: large-scale gatherings with free food, art, classes, and local partners that build connection, dignity, and collective power.

We believe that access to healthy food is fundamental, that neighbors caring for neighbors strengthens communities and that creative engagement and organizing are essential tools for equity. We envision a Miami where no one goes hungry, where everyone is seen and supported, and where community-led solutions drive sustainable change.
