Art for Us, a non-profit 501(c)(3) organization, was recognized by the National Endowment for the Arts Big Read and Arts Midwest on 2022-2023, as one of the sixty-two organizations nationwide to be a recipient of a modest grant that will support community art. With the help from that grant, Art for Us produced it's first musical, Aves al viento/Birds to the Wind, with original score, lyrics and a muti-disciplinary production of director, author and producer Cristina Rebull, President of Art for Us, EMMY 2013, in collaboration with the arranger, orchestrator and musical producer Jorge Gómez, GRAMMY 2016. The musical was a success with sold out performances. Aves al viento/Birds to the Wind is a tribute to the valor and courage of us, immigrants, a song to all have have left behind our land, our family and our friends, to reinvent ourselves in another country, and try to get ahead in our new home. This year, Art for Us is promoting Aves al viento/Birds to the Wind for another season with performances in Miami and Los Angeles. We are also working on producing Esperando a Mamá at the beginning of 2024, a play who's premiere in 2006 was received with great audience and press success. This play addresses the issue of Cuban immigration narrated through the life of a family of six sibilings, from six different exiles, who must unite and save their differences to achieve the arrival of Mamá, an offstage character who is lost around the world waiting for the miracle of the family union. Mamá is the image of Cuba and the story states that her life and freedom depend on this union between the siblings. The tragicomedy Esperando a Mamá is an original work by Cristina Rebull published in the Baquiana Literary Magazine-Annual XIII(2011-2012) and was performed in Miami during a six week season at full capacity. Sixteen years later, immigration continues to be a poignant issue within our community, and the nostalgia for the land, the family, the friends, the customs and even the language that we left behind a living pain that follows us wherever we go. Esperando a Mamá is a call to unite for the common cause of freedom in our countries of origin.
