Social Emotional Learning is the process by which humans acquire and effectively apply the knowledge, attitudes, and skills necessary to understand and manage our emotions, identify and achieve positive goals, feel and demonstrate empathy for others, establish and maintain good relationships, and make sensible decisions. In other words, SEL addresses children's ability to learn about and manage their emotions and interactions with others-the skills all children need to succeed in school, form healthy relationships, and eventually excel in the workplace. Research confirms that quality social emotional learning programs have powerful positive effects on young people in a variety of personal, academic, and professional situations.

Because of the robust body of research demonstrating the positive effects of quality SEL programs on a variety of youth outcomes, Sharing is Caring developed a culturally competent, structured social emotional learning program to serve young people in and around the Miami-Dade County area. Our innovative program incorporates the five core competencies that make up social emotional learning: Self-Awareness, Self-Management, Responsible Decision-Making, Social Awareness, and Relationship Skills. Over the last two years we've successfully delivered our flagship SEL programs, coupled with youth development activities. We've built fruitful partnerships with several other like-minded organizations, including Silent Victims of crime, CMB Visions, SEEK Foundation, Lotus House, and the YWCA. Further, we've had the opportunity to engage our youth in service projects aimed at helping others who are at-risk in our community, including the homeless.

This is a defining moment in history. The path forward will rely on SEL competencies as we take stock of what we have lost, shed tears for the departed, honor the heroes, and build our infrastructures, our societies, our economies, and our sense of place in the world anew.
