But here in South Florida, like in communities across the country, local news is under strain and under threat.
Press Forward South Florida is committed to strengthening local news and information across our region. We’re working to expand access to trusted, community-rooted local news so residents can stay informed, hold leaders accountable, and connect to civic life.
WHAT WE DO
Gifts to Press Forward South Florida support four areas of work across Broward, Miami-Dade and Monroe counties:
Community-based newsrooms
Investing in community-based newsrooms and collaborative partnerships to expand access to information in the languages people speak, and the platforms they access.
Training and resources
Providing training and resources for local news and information providers to strengthen their business operations, expand their impact, and ensure their long-term sustainability.
The next generation of journalists
Working with local universities to connect the next generation of journalists to professional opportunities, including funding stipends for students helping close gaps in election coverage across Broward, Miami-Dade and Monroe Counties.
A coalition for equitable access
Building a coalition of journalists, philanthropy, community leaders and others to mobilize resources, create partnerships, and foster innovative approaches to equitable access to news and information.
OUR IMPACT
In 2026, we invested in more than a dozen local newsrooms and media partnerships in South Florida.
From digital start-ups to the region’s oldest Black-owned newspaper, a legacy newsroom to South Florida’s public radio station, and nonprofit outlets serving both English- and Spanish-language audiences. We also supported stipends for journalism students and invested in a civic journalism initiative at Florida International University. This funding will help outlets build more sustainable business operations and increase access to critical information for residents across Broward, Miami-Dade and Monroe counties.
NATIONAL MOVEMENT
Press Forward is national movement to reimagine local news. Press Forward Locals, like the South Florida chapter, are a key part of the initiative. These chapters bring new donors and foundations together to expand resources and create place-based initiatives specific to our region’s information needs.
THE SOUTH FLORIDA COALITION
South Florida faces critical, regional issues that the public needs to know about to act. Ensuring a thriving local news ecosystem is such a pressing issue that five of the region’s community foundations have come together to create a shared vision and a way forward.
The South Florida coalition includes the Community Foundation of Broward, Coral Gables Community Foundation, Key Biscayne Community Foundation, Ocean Reef Community Foundation and The Miami Foundation. We're supported by the John S. and James L. Knight Foundation, Press Forward and other local donors — like you!
Press Forward South Florida is an investment in local news and information to ensure everyone has access to the local knowledge they need to navigate daily life, hold leaders accountable, and stay connected to their communities.
