Vision

To ignite scientific discovery and ocean education that protects marine life and empowers conservation leaders.

Background

Ocean First Institute is a nonprofit dedicated to transforming the future of ocean conservation through cutting-edge shark research, real-world science education, and community engagement. While sharks are at the heart of our work, they help us tell a larger story — one about the health of our oceans and the urgency of protecting them.

For over a decade, we’ve led pivotal scientific research through field expeditions, long-term studies, partnerships with universities and agencies, and hands-on learning experiences that connect people directly to the ocean. Founded by marine biologists and dive professionals, we bring together scientists, students, families, policymakers, and local communities to ensure the permanent protection of ocean ecosystems.

Our Work in Florida

Every day, Ocean First Institute carries out mission-critical programs in Florida — from the Florida Keys to Biscayne Bay to the St. Lucie Estuary. Our team conducts shark conservation research, water quality monitoring, goliath grouper studies, and plastic pollution investigations that inform protection of these vital ecosystems.

Graduate students in our Ocean First Fellows Program are mentored by leading scientists and trained in field methods, data collection, and conservation science — building the next generation of ocean researchers.

Through our partnerships our scientists monitor water quality and fish health, generating critical data to safeguard estuaries that sustain both wildlife and communities. Our goal is simple and profound: healthy oceans for future generations.

Education That Inspires and Empowers

Our educational programs create lasting impact by bringing free, hands-on marine science directly to students and schools. From microplastics investigations to shark biology lessons, OFI provides real-world experiences that inspire environmental stewardship and strengthen community ties to the ocean.

In Miami-Dade County, our programs are growing rapidly — thanks to generous donors and corporate and foundation partners. We are expanding access to ocean science for thousands of students, including those who have never had the chance to explore the water just miles from their homes.

We believe every child deserves the opportunity to understand, love, and protect the ocean — and with your support, we’re making that vision a reality.
