NPCA's Sun Coast team is a leader in advancing the restoration of America's Everglades and Everglades National Park, working to improve natural flow and water quality, remove levees, fill canals, and reduce agricultural and urban runoff. NPCA helps address issues and harms to Florida Bay by engaging both Everglades National Park staff and local stakeholders to identify problems and solutions. We advocate for park funding with members of Congress and other elected officials and engage citizens to experience, enjoy and protect Florida Bay for current and future generations.
NPCA works to protect and restore the Florida's incredible yet severely imperiled coral reefs and marine wildlife. Coral reefs are an invaluable component of the entire marine ecosystem, protect shorelines from erosion, and support many local economies in the Sun Coast Region that are dependent on tourism and fisheries. We help counter growing threats to coral such as climate change, deteriorating water quality, disease, harmful human activities, and pollution from large-scale agricultural runoff.
NPCA works to expand access to and awareness of national parks in gateway communities and among urban and veteran communities, especially in the city of Homestead and metropolis of Miami. We engage and empower diverse communities in Miami-Dade County to inspire effective advocacy for our treasured parks through Civic Voice Lessons. This project introduces young urban citizens, often from historically underrepresented and underserved populations, to our local marine environment as a recreational experience, an economic driver for the region, an important resource for this vast ecosystem and a natural protector from powerful storms. Youth participate in civic dialogue training that focuses on addressing a specific marine or park issue and results in participants holding informed discussions on this issue with fellow citizens, political leaders and scientists.
