Like any other person in South Florida who enjoys life on the waterways during a holiday, or on a scorching hot weekend day, Monica Burguera was hanging out with friends on their boat in Biscayne Bay having fun and relaxing. The Florida International University student was familiar with the water, having competed in many regatta events. But during the 2006 Columbus Day Regatta weekend festivities in Miami, the Key Biscayne resident's life was cut short in a tragic boating accident. The accident also took the life of James Noel Pou and left many others seriously injured.
Monica Burguera was just 20 years old when her life was cut short in a boating accident in Miami. Known for her radiant smile, adventurous spirit, and love for the water, Monica’s memory is the heart of our mission. Her family and friends created the Foundation to transform grief into purpose: to prevent other families from suffering the same loss, and to honor Monica by making the waters she loved safer for all.
Since 2013, in partnership with the U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary Flotilla and the Monica Burguera Foundation has certified over 11,000 students in its free monthly "About Boating Safety Courses."
Our mission is to honor the memory of Monica Burguera by raising awareness of boating safety and conducting educational programs that promote ocean safety and to prevent beach and ocean injuries and fatalities.
