Lawyers for Children America was established in 1995 as a bipartisan public-private partnership under the leadership of the late Janet Reno, former United States Attorney General; the late Lloyd Cutler, former White House Counsel to President Clinton; and Zoë Baird, current CEO of the national Markle Foundation. LFCA was established in Miami Florida in 1998 under the leadership of Attorney General Reno; the late John Edward Smith of the law firm of Steel, Hector & Davis; and the Honorable Rosemary Barkett, former Chief Justice of the Florida Supreme Court and former Judge of the United States Court of Appeals for the 11th Circuit. LFCA's launch was celebrated at a ceremony hosted by Attorney General Reno in the Great Hall of the Department of Justice in Washington DC.
Lawyers for Children America's host law firm in Miami is Holland & Knight, which provides free office space to house LFCA's office. Many other local law firms sponsor LFCA's trainings for new volunteer lawyers. LFCA is funded in part by grants from the Children's Trust, the Miami-Dade County Community Based Organizations grant program, the Miami Foundation, LGBTQ Community Projects Fund, Miami-Dade State Attorney Denise Moon Fund, the Leesfield Family Foundation, and the Florida Bar Foundation, among others.
Since our inception, LFCA in Miami has trained and mentored over 2,000 pro bono lawyers and represented over 3,000 dependent children and youth in our community. Annually, LFCA's Miami volunteer lawyers and their law firms donate over one million dollars of pro bono legal services to dependent children and youth through LFCA.
Mission
Lawyers for Children America (LFCA) is a 501(c)(3) non-profit child advocacy organization that provides pro bono legal representation to children and youth who are victims of abuse, abandonment and neglect. LFCA recruits, trains, and supports volunteer lawyers who serve as attorneys for dependent children and protect their legal rights. LFCA pro bono lawyers also mentor teen youth in foster care, provide legal rights education, teach youth self-advocacy, and empower youth to engage in group advocacy to improve the child welfare system.
LFCA provides holistic legal representation to dependent children from birth through age 18, as well as to former foster youth through age 23. LFCA serves several special populations of youth, including teen mothers, LGBTQ youth, human trafficking victims, and children with disabilities. LFCA also advocates for systemic reforms to improve the lives of all children and youth in Miami-Dade County.
