The Innocence Project of Florida is a 501(c)(3) non-profit legal defense organization dedicated to representing individuals in Florida’s prisons who can prove their innocence through the use of DNA testing and other newly discovered evidence. We have helped secure the release of 38 individuals (and counting) who collectively spent over 885 years in prison for crimes they didn't commit. This work changes lives. It’s the bridge from years of injustice to a future filled with dignity, stability, and healing.
IPF works in areas throughout Miami-Dade county. Several of IPF's freed clients live in the Miami area, including Miami Shores and Coral Gables, and IPF's Transition Services team has worked with local organizations to secure housing, employment, and basic needs for these clients. Additionally, IPF annually participates in the Reentry One community outreach event in Miami Gardens, and frequently holds outreach events at Miami-area law firms. IPF is also a frequent collaborator with the Innocence Clinic at the University of Miami School of Law.
Our mission is to:
Screen and investigate cases in which meritorious innocence claims are identified;
Secure DNA testing when biological evidence exists;
Advocate for the release and/or exoneration of individuals whose cases present meritorious innocence claims based on evidence of actual innocence;
Provide transitional and aftercare services to exonerees; and
Advocate for necessary criminal justice reform to avoid wrongful incarcerations in the future.
