The HEM (Health Equity Matters) Foundation, Inc. is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit dedicated to supporting individuals with sickle cell disease (SCD).

Sickle cell disease (SCD) is the world’s most common genetic disease, affecting over 100,000 people within the United States, with most being of African descent -- although it can affect any race/ethnicity. Florida has the highest prevalence of SCD in the United States, including the largest affected Hispanic population. SCD is characterized by unpredictable and severe pain crises, organ damage. and reduced life expectancy.  It is highly stigmatized and misunderstood, which contributes to worse health outcomes.

The HEM Foundation is addressing a critical and often overlooked aspect of care for individuals with SCD: mental health. SCD patients face chronic pain, frequent hospitalizations, and systemic health and racial disparities that severely impact their mental well-being and quality of life. Despite these challenges, mental health support for this community remains scarce, resulting in increased emotional distress, poor disease management, and diminished life expectancy. The need for targeted mental health interventions is urgent and unmet.

To tackle this gap, the HEM Foundation has developed the THRIVE program, a free mental health initiative specifically designed for individuals with SCD. THRIVE integrates evidence-based practices such as yoga, mindfulness, and meditation—proven methods that reduce stress, improve emotional regulation, and enhance overall psychological well-being. It includes expert-led sessions on the impact of mental health as it relates to sickle cell, in addition to educating on way to effectively manage pain without the use of medications.  This holistic approach not only addresses the physical symptoms of SCD but also empowers participants with tools to manage the psychological burden of their condition, leading to improved health outcomes and a better quality of life.

We also know educational level correlates with health outcomes. We awarded 6 scholarships in 2025 for sickle cell warriors who are positively influencing their community.  Our initiatives are made possible by your generous donations!
