“The band made my heart jump with joy, and my soul received large doses of the good music it was missing!”

— Rolando Ochoa

Community bands, including the Greater Miami Symphonic Band, have played a pivotal role in American musical culture by providing live music for social and ceremonial occasions at venues like bandstands, town halls, and auditoriums. These ensembles offer thousands of talented musicians ongoing opportunities for musical expression, while serving as an important cultural resource for local audiences.

The Greater Miami Symphonic Band was founded in 1979 by Allan Tavss and a group of South Florida musicians, originally as the Greater Miami Community Concert Band, Inc. It continues the tradition of community bands by delivering high-quality symphonic band music, showcasing diverse wind band repertoire, and offering both artistic satisfaction for performers and enjoyment for audiences. Concerts often feature prominent guest artists and soloists who perform with the ensemble, further enriching the regional musical landscape.

Comprised of dedicated volunteer musicians from various backgrounds, the band is unified by a passion for music study, performance, and advocacy. Through its public performances in concert halls and outdoor settings, the Greater Miami Symphonic Band helps connect South Florida residents to the rich and varied tradition of symphonic band literature.

“The music is absolutely wonderful! Everyone should hear this band.”

— Max Mayfield

This season, the Greater Miami Symphonic Band is scheduled to perform eight concerts, offering both entertaining and educational experiences at a variety of venues. Key locations include Gusman Hall at the University of Miami, the Banyan Bowl at Pinecrest Gardens, Kendall United Methodist Church, and the Biltmore Hotel.

Concert Details by Venue

The Gusman Hall concerts are evening events, typically lasting 90 minutes with an intermission, and feature carefully selected and presented programming.

At Pinecrest Gardens, the band presents afternoon family concerts, running 80 minutes or less, and designed with lighter repertoire suitable for all ages.

The Solo and Chamber Concert at Kendall United Methodist Church in Pinecrest provides an opportunity for band members to showcase smaller ensembles and solo works, enriching the band's offerings and giving the audience a more intimate musical experience.

The season finale concert, held at the Biltmore Hotel, is a two-hour program of patriotic music that precedes the City of Coral Gables Fourth of July fireworks celebration, creating a festive atmosphere for the community.

Through these diverse programming choices and accessible venues, the Greater Miami Symphonic Band continues to make symphonic band music a valuable community tradition in South Florida.

Mission

The Greater Miami Symphonic Band's mission is to provide high-quality musical performances that enrich and inspire our community toward a lifelong appreciation of music. We seek to engage, entertain, and educate audience members young and old while supporting our members' development of their musical abilities.
