Florida Film House International – Initiative Overview

Florida Film House International Inc. (FFHI) is a nonprofit 501(c)(3) organization dedicated to empowering youth, filmmakers, and communities through film education, production, and cultural events. Based in Miami, FFHI was founded on the belief that storytelling has the power to transform lives, create economic opportunity, and preserve culture for future generations.

At the heart of FFHI’s mission is the creation of a pipeline from passion to profession. We open doors for youth and emerging filmmakers who are too often locked out of the film and media industries, giving them the tools, mentorship, and platforms they need to succeed.

The 1st Take Youth Film Program

The 1st Take Youth Film Program introduces students to the art and business of filmmaking through hands-on training in screenwriting, directing, cinematography, acting, and editing. Operating year-round in Miami-Dade and Broward schools, community centers, and summer camps, 1st Take equips over 500 youth each year with industry-level skills and mentorship from working filmmakers. Students collaborate to produce their own short films, which premiere at public screenings and the Youth Empowerment Day at the Urban Film Festival. Alumni have earned scholarships, entered college, and launched careers in film, proving the impact of this initiative.

The Urban Film Festival (UFF)

Now in its 10th year, the Urban Film Festival is the largest free Black & Brown film festival in America, attracting over 5,000 attendees annually and showcasing more than 200 films. The festival is a cultural home for diverse filmmakers, featuring panels, workshops, and youth programs alongside community celebrations. With over 500 guests traveling in from out of town, UFF generates significant economic impact while elevating Miami as a hub for creative storytelling.

Community Service & Empowerment

FFHI extends its mission beyond the screen through community service campaigns that meet local needs and celebrate culture. Annual initiatives include a Book Bag Giveaway providing supplies for hundreds of students, a Holiday Toy Drive bringing joy to families in need, and Youth Basel, a creative showcase during Art Basel that highlights the talents of Miami’s youth on a global stage. These programs ensure that our work in film is always tied to real community empowerment.

Global & Economic Growth

FFHI is committed to building a sustainable creative economy in Miami and beyond. We regularly produce independent films and documentaries that employ local talent, vendors, and crew. Internationally, FFHI is developing training and studio initiatives in Africa and the Caribbean to link Miami filmmakers with the global market. This forward-looking vision positions Miami as not only a cultural hub but also a launchpad for international creative exchange.

Our Impact

  • 500+ youth trained each year in filmmaking and media.

  • 11 annual scholarships awarded to graduating seniors pursuing film and education.

  • 200+ films showcased yearly through UFF and youth programs.

  • 5,000+ festival attendees, including 500+ who travel to Miami, boosting local economic growth.

  • Alumni success stories like Jhondel Linares and Beatrice Alerte, who started in 1st Take and are now thriving in higher education and the film industry.

Why Support Matters

Your support makes it possible for FFHI to keep the Urban Film Festival free, expand the 1st Take Youth Film Program into more schools and communities, and continue serving Miami through scholarships, youth empowerment, and cultural events. Every dollar raised on Give Miami Day helps us provide access, opportunity, and inspiration to the next generation of storytellers.

Together, we are building a pipeline that transforms creativity into careers, community into culture, and passion into profession.

Mission

The mission of the 1st Take Youth Film Program is to empower young people through the art of filmmaking by providing hands-on training, mentorship, and creative opportunities that build confidence, develop technical skills, and inspire career pathways in film, media, and the arts. Our program is dedicated to ensuring that youth from underrepresented and underserved communities have access to the tools, education, and experiences needed to tell their own stories and transform passion into profession.
