FillABag was founded after winning The Miami Foundation Public Space Challenge in 2018 by Key Biscayne residents Manny Rionda, Nancy Levitt Davis and James Duncan.
FillABag Stations are strategically installed near trash and recycling bins, where collected trash may be responsibly discarded.
While the initiative was born and raised in Key Biscayne, FillABag Stations have been activated in several Miami communities and throughout Florida's surrounding coastlines. Besides beaches; parks, neighborhoods, open and public spaces all qualify for activation. There are currently 62 FillABag Stations in Florida, Alabama, Rhode Island, Massachusetts, NY, South Carolina, Ohio and Mexico.
Mission
FillABag works with coastal communities to bring awareness to the problems of marine debris, beach litter, single use plastic consumption & pollution.
In 2023 alone, FillABag hosted 37 group cleanup events in the Miami area, engaging 1,163 volunteers, and together removed 9,069 lbs. of debris from our beaches, mangroves and neighborhoods.
What began as a simple idea - install posts with reusable bags & buckets at beach paths, inviting folks to turn an ordinary stroll into a meaningful clean up - has evolved into much more! In less than 5 years, thanks to a comprehensive, guided, & scalable "Do It Yourself" solution, there are now 62 FillABag Stations in 7 states, including over 20 in the Miami area.
Locally, FillABag implements a high school internship program, delivers hands-on workshops for K-12 schools, hosts team building engagements, spearheads community activism, mentors local youth, & collaborates with like-minded organizations regionally, nationally, & globally.
When participating in eco-activism, individuals of all ages & backgrounds forge deeper connections with their environment & community, leading to thoughtful choices towards a more sustainable lifestyle.
