The Alzheimer's Association Southeast Florida Chapter is committed to helping the families in eight counties: Okeechobee, St. Lucie, Martin, Palm Beach, Broward, Miami-Dade, Monroe and Indian River through the provision of the Caregiver Connection Program.
In Miami-Dade, there are over 61,500 people living with Alzheimer's disease and 22% of the population is over age 60. The disease can span up to 20 years and is emotionally, physically and financially challenging to caregivers. As symptoms worsen, the care required of family members can result in increased emotional stress and depression; new or exacerbated health problems; and depleted income and finances. Alzheimer's disease is not only responsible for more and more deaths, but the disease is contributing to more cases of poor health and disability.
All of the components of the Caregiver Connection program are community-based services that occur directly in the community and have been specially tailored over the many years the Association has been in existence to be continually improved upon and refined to better meet the needs of the individual with the disease and the caregiver. The services through the Caregiver Connection include: 24/7 Information & Referral Helpline, Care Consultations, Support Groups, and Caregiver Training. While there is no cure for the disease, studies have consistently shown that the active management of the disease through proven interventions such as support groups and education about the disease can improve quality of life for affected individuals. The Association's services help to reduce stress, reduce adverse health impacts associated with caregiving, reduce caregiver isolation, and enhance skills to provide care that is more effective.
The Walk to End Alzheimer's Miami is held on November 16th and is one of the largest Chapter events to raise funds for local programs and services. Teams and individuals from across the community come together to raise awareness and funds.
To eliminate Alzheimer's disease through the advancement of research; to provide and enhance care and support for all affected; and to reduce the risk of dementia through the promotion of brain health.
