Miami EdTech is an education technology non-profit organization seeking to address the biggest challenges in education through innovation and technology. We vest organizational decision-making power in the Black/African American and Hispanic/LatinX communities to combat their disenfranchisement resulting from historical and contemporary structural racism.

Data shows that 93% of parents want computer science (CS) taught in their child's school; only 51% of M-DCPS high schools offer it. Students who learn CS in schools are 6x more likely (women 10x) to major in it. Miami EdTech builds the pipeline between CS/STEM education and careers by providing classroom, community, and peer support for community historically excluded from jobs in the computing sector and creating an inclusive learning environment for students and teachers of all races, socioeconomic backgrounds, and cultures.

While CS wages are 2x those of non-STEM jobs, minorities and economically disadvantaged students are underrepresented in the workforce. Hispanic workers make up only 8% of the CS workforce and Black workers comprise 7%, even though Hispanic and Black people comprise 17% and 11% of all employed adults, respectively. In 2018, it was projected that almost 2.5 million STEM jobs would go unfilled in the US.

Miami EdTech has four core program areas:

1. Professional Development: We’ve trained or provided curriculum to teachers across the country, many of whom passed industry certification exams leading to increased access for students.

2. Community: Miami EdTech's Workforce.Miami initiative provides a user-friendly job search and support platform that includes resources to support employers and job seekers in connecting and thriving.

3. Out of School Time: Our STEAM based experiences focus on empowering the next generation of tech talent and topics include Web development, robotics, augmented reality, virtual reality, machine learning, and more!

4. Entrepreneurship: Miami EdTech's Entrepreneurship programs include an Incubator and Accelerator that has supported close to 30 organizations in their business, product, and fundraising goals. Previous participants include notable companies such as Kiddie Kredit and GoSprout.

Mission

Miami EdTech's mission is to close the skills gap and improve economic opportunities for our community through computer science advocacy and integration, digital skilling and workforce development.
