GableStage has been hit doubly hard during this time of global impact. In addition to having to cancel our production of The Price, set to open on March 21, 2020, close our administrative offices and subsequently cancel the remainder of our 2019-2020 season (4 productions running thru October 2020) - the organization also suffered the loss of its leader and longtime Producing Artistic Director, Joseph Adler on April 16, 2020. The Board of Directors has engaged a prestigious Arts Consulting Firm to begin a National Search for the organizations' next Artistic Director. We anticipate that new leadership will be in place by January 1, 2021, and will begin preparing the organization for reopening (as local regulations permit) and the 2021-2022 season of a return to live theatre.
In the interim, GableStage successfully transitioned to completing the remainder of the 2020 season by commissioning world premieres of short-form virtual content by some of the finest artists in our theater community. These short-form world premiere productions have filled a current void and have also directly supported artists in this unprecedented time by engaging the theatre community, patrons, playwrights, and artists. The program, which commissioned nine projects from twelve artists, concluded on September 25. Projects were premiered every Friday on the GableStage website. The feedback and overall response to the program has been overwhelmingly positive, not only from patrons but from artists of all disciplines. We are already planning to continue offering virtual programming and are hopeful to begin producing live performances in outdoor settings in Coral Gables before being able to reconvene for live theatre at our Biltmore Hotel venue. GableStage is also pivoting its impactful Education programming to a virtual format in order to continue serving the community with much-needed resources for schools, students, and teachers.
Give Miami Day support will be specifically designated to our Virtual Education Program in February 2021. The program consists of a highly interactive virtual version of our flagship education program, the Page to Stage Tour which will include a performance of Shakespeare's A MIDSUMMER NIGHTS DREAM, a digital study guide for teachers, and a Q&A session with the performers and creative team. The virtual format of this year's program will include seven actors, who filmed scenes independently in their respective environments. Recorded scenes will be edited and will accompany live interventions by the performers on a streaming platform. GableStage is working closely with Miami-Dade Schools to make sure the program is presented in a safe and valuable way to as many students as possible. This program will fill the void left by live performance opportunities and offer educators much-needed resources to supplement their virtual curriculum this school year.
