GableStage, one of the longest running and most acclaimed theatre companies in South Florida is currently celebrating its 25th Season at the historic Biltmore Hotel. Originally founded as Florida Shakespeare Theatre by two Coral Gables based, best friends, GableStage is committed to serving its Coral Gables and South Florida community with unrivaled artistic excellence.

In its 25 years as GableStage, the company has employed over 2000 artists (actors, directors, designers, musicians, writers and craftspeople) to live and work in the Coral Gables community; has provided 650,000 patrons, including 175,000 Miami-Dade students, consistent opportunities to exercise their imaginations and expand their capacity for empathy, compassion and problem-solving; and has contributed upwards of $10M to the local economy.

In 2015, GableStage was chosen to be the company-in-residence at the renovated Coconut Grove Playhouse. Until that project is complete, the company has made its home in the historic horse stables of the Biltmore Hotel in Coral Gables. We offer a uniquely intimate experience for over 18,000 patrons a year. GableStage produces five productions, each running 22-35 performances, from September through June.

In Newport's short tenure, the company has gone from having a $1.1M annual budget, to a budget of $2.3M in 2023. The company has done this by having an unflinching commitment to community and to the importance of theatre education for people of all ages.

GableStage launched its popular pre-show “Window on the Work” series in November 2021, where, before each and every performance, a member of the artistic team offers audiences a 30-minute "deep-dive" on the production at hand. The company recently won a special Silver Palm award for this extraordinary effort. Over the course of two plus seasons and including 13 separate productions, the company has offered this in-person, very popular, complimentary educational offering over 326 times - with no plan to stop.

The company's Student / Teacher Rush is unique for the region and stands out for radical commitment to audience development and hospitality. Under this program, students of all ages and all teachers, are invited to fill any empty seat, at any performance, free of charge.

After a 10 year hiatus, GableStage relaunched its beloved student matinee program. In 2023-24, 5,000 high school students from 15 Miami-Dade public schools, will attend one of six special performances. An additional 3,500 students will experience the company's popular Shakespeare in the Schools program, which sets Shakespeare's most classic work in contemporary settings and tours to 22 Miami-Dade high schools in the month of March. This season, the 11th Season of Shakespeare-in-the-Schools, features a partnership with Florida International University to produce Macbeth, with a focus on school bullying.

The company continues to be one of the only professional regional theatres with a continued commitment to stream its productions, making the work accessible not only to people geographically removed, but also to the significant populations of patrons who are unable to attend the productions for a wide variety of immune compromised, mobility or health related concerns.

GableStage has a commitment not only to excellence on stage, but with Newport and her new team, has a commitment to being a Best Place to Work. The artists and core staff at GableStage are paid more robustly and more equitably than any other arts group of its size.

GableStage's 25th Season is ambitious. From the Miami premiere of August Wilson’s autobiographical, life-affirming final play, to introductions to the field’s most exciting theatre writers and makers, to classics and soon-to-be-classics, the 23-24 Season makes a passionate case for connection while asking the most essential questions of our time.

Up next, Newport direct's the regional premiere of Larissa Fasthorse’s The Thanksgiving Play (November 17 - December 10). Fresh from its Broadway run, Fasthorse’s clever satire marked the first play by an indigenous American woman to have a play on the Great White Way. Through the partnerships with the University of Miami's Native American Studies program and Mosaic Miami, GableStage proves it is more than simply a place to see plays. It is a citizen in our community.
