Buddy System MIA is a grassroots nonprofit fighting food insecurity by creating innovative, community-driven ways to ensure every neighbor has access to free, healthy food.
Since 2020, we have built a movement rooted in a simple belief: neighbors supporting neighbors. Each year, we rescue and redistribute more than 250,000 pounds of surplus food, transforming food that might otherwise go to waste into nourishment for thousands of Miami-Dade residents.
Our programs are designed to meet people where they are, especially neighbors facing barriers that traditional food assistance programs do not always address, including seniors, people with disabilities, homebound residents, families with limited incomes and people experiencing houselessness.
Community Fridge Initiative: Our network of public refrigerators provides free, healthy food 24/7 in under-resourced neighborhoods across Miami-Dade. Painted by local artists and stocked by our community, each fridge is a place where anyone can give and anyone can take what they need.
Homebound Food Access Program: Volunteers deliver curated boxes of fresh groceries directly to elderly, disabled and homebound neighbors, providing consistent access to nutritious food while creating meaningful human connection.
Trans Food Assistance Program: Provides free, curated groceries to transgender and gender-diverse neighbors facing food insecurity, creating a welcoming and affirming way to access nutritious food with dignity and care.
Emergency Food Access Program: When a neighbor is facing an immediate food crisis, we respond quickly with groceries tailored to their household's needs.
Community Events: Free food distributions, art, educational programming and community gatherings bring neighbors and local partners together while expanding access to essential resources.
The People’s Pantry: Our newest initiative is creating a permanent community food pantry in Overtown, expanding our ability to rescue, store and distribute fresh food while providing neighbors with a reliable, dignified place to access groceries. The pantry represents the next chapter of Buddy System MIA: building long-term food access infrastructure directly within the communities we serve.
We believe in a world where community members uplift each other to create long-term change for a more compassionate, healthy and just world!
