South Florida Symphony Orchestra (SFSO) was founded by Maestra Sebrina María Alfonso in 1997, having launched its 25th Anniversary Season this month at Miami Beach's New World Center.

SFSO strongly believes that the transformative power of music and music-making can positively impact the lives of all who reside in Miami-Dade County and surrounding communities. The Symphony in the Schools program includes engaging, thoughtfully curated, compelling, and fun classical music programs created for students in underserved areas. To date, more than 100,000 children across Miami-Dade, Broward, and Monroe counties have participated in this impactful program.

SFSO is the only performing arts organization that brings the Symphonic Arts to the children in their schools across Miami-Dade, Monroe, and Broward counties free of charge. With your support, students can have access to ongoing contacts with SFSO music educators and the orchestra throughout the school year. Music education is tied to the Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Mathematics (STEAM) curriculum and to Florida State Education Standards. SFSO music educators are also Florida-State certified instructors.

Imagine the impact of an introduction to music through a thematic program such as "Preserving Our Coral Reefs." Students learn about music and the scientific concepts related to the coral reef ecosystem. At a second session, the symphony orchestra brings the theme to life onstage to the wonderment of the students who have never experienced the symphony onstage. Another program, "The Power of Perseverance" explores the often under-appreciated contributions by women of color to science, technology, engineering, the arts, and mathematics.

The SFSO offers Miami-Dade three Masterworks concerts this season at our new home at the New World Center in Miami Beach, as well as Handel's Messiah at Barry University in Miami Shores.

Mission

South Florida Symphony's mission is to delight, inspire, and educate the communities we serve through music.

Through South Florida Symphony's innovative Symphony in the Schools, one of our flagship community engagement programs, we bring the symphonic arts to underserved students throughout our Miami-Dade, Broward, and Monroe County communities. Symphony in the Schools facilitates engagement in the arts for children and their families at Title 1 schools and beyond. These schools serve culturally and economically underserved children who would otherwise have little to no access to orchestral music. Our Symphony's musicians and educators engage with students and foster a lifelong love for the Arts, as well as opening up a whole new world of possibilities within the Arts.
