About The Black Archives
Founded in 1977 by Dr. Dorothy Jenkins Fields, The Black Archives History & Research Foundation of South Florida, Inc. is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization dedicated to preserving and promoting the rich cultural heritage of Black South Florida. Our mission is to collect, preserve, and disseminate the history and culture of Black South Florida from 1896 to the present.
Historic Preservation and Cultural Enrichment
Central to our efforts is the restoration and revitalization of historic landmarks that serve as cultural hubs for the community. The Historic Lyric Theater, built in 1913, stands as a testament to Miami's Black cultural legacy. After extensive restoration, it reopened in 2014 as a vibrant center for arts and culture, hosting performances, exhibitions, and community events that celebrate the African Diaspora.
Adjacent to the Lyric Theater, the Overtown Historic Folklife Village showcases the neighborhood's rich history through murals, green spaces, and cultural landmarks. This initiative honors the legacy of Miami's Overtown community, once known as the "Harlem of the South," and fosters community engagement and economic development. Other historic properties within the Overtown neighborhood owned and maintained by The Black Archives include the Historic D.A. Dorsey House and the Dr. S. H. Johnson X-Ray Clinic.
Culturally Relevant Programming
Our programming is designed to engage and educate audiences of all ages, emphasizing the importance of cultural heritage. Initiatives like the group tours and student field trips encourage children and adults to develop their knowledge of the local Black history and its impact on Miami-Dade County and beyond.
Through these efforts, The Black Archives continues to serve as a beacon of cultural pride and a catalyst for community revitalization, ensuring that the rich history and vibrant culture of Black South Florida are preserved and celebrated for future generations.
