6th Street Dance Studio, though housed in a single room studio, is a three-time Knight Arts Challenge winner. Awards were given in Miami for their free TruSchool dance program for children in urban dance, ballet, tap and performance; their collaborative Homegrown program bringing different types of young professional dancers together to work. They were also awarded a KAC in Detroit for Magic City vs. Motor City, a real-time freestyle urban dance battle between the 2 cities broadcast with Internet II at New World Symphony with live musicians in both cities. Brigid Baker has been recognized by the National Trust for Historic Preservation in "Little Havana Me Importa: The Faces and Places That Define a Neighborhood," citing ten local residents whose passion, creativity, and penchant for history is ensuring that future generations will experience the Little Havana we know today. She was awarded the 2019 Community Champion Award in appreciation of hard work done in Little Havana. The studio says yes and hosts every kind of community activity and performance with free admission. The syllabi and schedule change and grow to accommodate the movement in Miami, permitting the greatest variety of humans to transit the space, while protecting the integrity of people and place.

Mission

6thStreet Dance Studio, in Little Havana, and under the direction of Brigid Baker since 2003, is a gathering place for process-oriented artists and community dedicated to learning and artistry. Its basis in cultural ecology adapts programming as community needs arise. The studio is a protector of vernacular work, from urban arts to Afro-Cuban and rhumba offering classes in contemporary ballet technique, Lightbody movement, urbandance, AfroCuban, rhumba, TruSchool children's program, and composition for the crafting of new work. The studio hosts rehearsals, residencies, workshops, performances, lectures, and discussions in the performing and visual arts. It is home to brigid baker wholecproject contemporary dance company.

6th Street bases its operation on intentional diversity, sacred economics, is debt-free, green, and supports direct giving. 6th Street Dance Studio/wholeproject is dedicated to conquering barriers of racism, sexism, classism and all other forms of small mindedness.
