FIU Medina Aquarius Program

The FIU Medina Aquarius Program is dedicated to the study and preservation of marine ecosystems worldwide. At the heart of this program lies the world’s only permanent underwater research laboratory – FIU Aquarius Reef Base. For more than three decades, this globally significant asset has provided unparalleled means to study the ocean, test and develop state-of-the-art technology, and directly engage the world in ocean science exploration. 

Situated 60 feet beneath the surface in the Florida Keys National Marine Sanctuary, the FIU Aquarius Reef Base gives researchers the most precious resource in science - time. It affords researchers significantly more dive time which accelerates breakthroughs—on coral reef recovery, climate resilience, marine life behavior, coastal protection, and sustainable ocean use. Aquarius also serves as a training and testing site for specialized divers and astronaut mission crews and is a great platform for partners across various industries to develop and test the latest underwater technology.
