Miami is located between the Everglades to the west and south and Biscayne Bay to the east. Beneath South Florida lies the Biscayne Aquifer which is replenished by freshwater flowing through the Everglades to provide us with plentiful drinking water. This water also supports the key drivers of our economy -- tourism, recreation, boating, fishing, and real estate. The work of The Everglades Foundation is to ensure that Everglades restoration continues and that the source of our drinking water is protected. Despite the importance of the Everglades to our way of life, few Miamians are aware of the Everglades' significance, and Florida schools are not required to teach about it. To create the next generation of environmental stewards, The Everglades Foundation created the Everglades Literacy Program - the world's only comprehensive, free K-12 Everglades curriculum - to give teachers the tools and knowledge to ensure that our children understand the ecological and economic value of America's Everglades. Supported by donor generosity, the Everglades Literacy program provides teachers with free lesson plans and materials aligned with Florida standards in reading, math and science. As of 2023, Miami-Dade represents the largest service area for the program, with 1,814 teachers trained in 196 schools, The Everglades Foundation's Literacy Program now reaches over 189,000 students across 30 counties. But there is so much more to be done. A gift of any amount to support The Everglades Foundation's Literacy program will help us continue to educate and equip the next generation in restoring and protecting this global treasure right in our own backyard.
