Communities In Schools of Miami, Inc.

A nonprofit organization

Communities In Schools of Miami (CIS of Miami) is an independent affiliate of Communities In Schools, the nation's largest provider of integrated student supports (ISS) - also known as wraparound services. For 30 years and counting, we work to support under-resourced Title I Miami-Dade County Public Schools to ensure that at-risk students have the support they need to achieve in school and graduate on time prepared for adult life.

The students we serve face numerous challenges outside of the classroom that often stand in the way of success inside the classroom and most of these challenges are associated with poverty. We join forces with principals, teachers, counselors and social workers to address these challenges. We also partner with the community - businesses, health care providers and other nonprofits - to connect students with critical services. Together, we provide resources inside schools and do whatever it takes to help students succeed.
Using the CIS research-based model of ISS, we position a trained and certified Site Coordinator (SC) directly in our targeted schools - all day, every school day. This gives them the opportunity to learn first-hand of students' individual needs and build a stable, trusting relationship that they can count on. The SCs serve as a gateway to a wider web of support in the schools and community. Whether a student needs food, clothes, a clean uniform, a ride to school, tutoring, mentoring, life skills, emotional support or counseling to cope with adversity, a job or a chance, our caring SCs are there to connect them to the empowering resources they need to succeed.

Two core programs: Bridges to Graduation & Beyond (dropout prevention) and Miami Reads AmeriCorps (early literacy intervention)
Comprehensive school and student needs assessments and support plans provided
Serving nine K-12 Title I Miami-Dade County Public Schools
More than 4,500 students and families served each year

Mission

The mission of Communities In Schools of Miami is to surround students with a community of support, empowering them to stay in school and achieve in life.

Everything we do is guided by the "Five Basics." Developed by Communities In Schools' founder Bill Milliken, the Five Basics are a set of essentials that every child needs and deserves.

1. A one-on-one relationship with a caring adult.

2. A safe place to learn and grow.

3. A healthy start and a healthy future.

4. A marketable skill to use upon graduation.

5. A chance to give back to peers and community.
